LAKES REGION CONSERVATION CORPS AT THE SQUAM LAKES ASSOCIATION                            

The Squam Lakes Association manages the Lakes Region Conservation Corps AmeriCorps program, and is one of eight host sites within the program. Click the link above to learn more about the program that is the driving force behind the Lakes Region's conservation efforts!     

The Squam Lakes Association is a non-profit conservation organization that works to conserve the natural beauty, peaceful character, and resources of the Squam watershed. Through conservation, education, and low-impact recreation, the SLA promotes the protection, careful use, and shared enjoyment of the Squam Lakes Region.

Full-Term  / January - November

Full-Term members serving at the SLA have the opportunity to experience the seasonal nature of conservation from January through November. The quiet winter is spent deep diving into projects, followed by a booming summer full of boots on the ground conservation, and closing with a picturesque autumn with time to run reports and close out the season. There are three assistant tracks candidates can apply for:

Watershed Resources Assistant (2 positions): Watershed Resources Assistants (WRA) work closely with the Director of Conservation. WRA’s ensure that all conservation related projects and programs are operating efficiently under three core areas: research, monitoring, and restoration, with the goal of continued improvement of the water quality of the Squam Watershed.

Education & Outreach Assistant (2 positions): Education & Outreach Assistants (EOA) work closely with the Director of Education and Communications & Outreach Coordinator. EOA’s will improve and develop curriculum for current education programming, expand programming to reach K-12 classrooms, and develop and promote outreach content.  

Trails & Access (2 positions): Trails & Access Assistants (TAA) work closely with the Director of Trails & Access and the Facilities & Access Manager. TAA’s will oversee components of SLA’s hiking trail management, outdoor access programs, and facilities maintenance.

Full-Term Lakes Region Conservation Corps members serving at the SLA receive the following over the course of the program:

  • Wilderness First Aid & CPR (value of $245)
  • SSI Open Water Diver certification (value of $780)
  • NAUI Weed Control Diver certification (value of $150)
  • NH Commercial boating license
  • Plow Operator training
  • Motorboat operator training
  • Housing with kitchen and laundry facilities
  • Bi-weekly stipend: $772.17 ($17,700 aggregate; subject to taxes)
  • AmeriCorps Education Award upon succesful completion of the program and 1700 hours minimum: $6,895
  • AmeriCorps Health Insurance (value of $4,500+)
  • Eligible for student loan forbearance and interest repayment on eligible loans
Half-Term  / May - October
In the summer/fall months (May- October) members scuba dive to remove aquatic invasive species, act as caretakers of our low impact campsites, maintain the SLA's 50+ miles of trails, monitor water quality, lead volunteer crews, run engaging environmental education programs, remove terrestrial invasive species, and educate the public on local and regional conservation initiatives.  Members also will spend nights out camping while they act as campsite caretakers at the Squam Lake's Association's low-impact island campsites. Members serving during the summer months have the opportunity to receive numerous certifications and housing is provided for members.

Half-Year Summer/Fall Lakes Region Conservation Corps members at the SLA receive the following over the course of the program:

  • Wilderness First Aid and CPR (value of $245)
  • SSI Open Water Diver certification (value of $780)
  • NAUI Weed control diver certification (vaue of $150)
  • NH Commercial boating license
  • Motorboat operator training
  • Housing with kitchen and laundry facilities
  • Bi-weekly stipend: $772.17 ($9,063.63 aggregate; subject to taxes)
  • AmeriCorps Education Award upon succesful completion of the program and 900 hours minimum: $3,447.50 
  • Eligible for student loan forbearance and interest repayment on eligible loans
